Explain why :
Fluorine has lower electron affinity than chlorine.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electron affinity of fluorine is less than that of chlorine because the atomic size of fluorine is very less than chlorine as a results there is a large electronic repulsion between the electrons of fluorine. Hence, in fluorine atom the incoming electron experiences lesser attraction (rather faces repulsion from the existing electrons) towards the nucleus than in chlorine atom.
