Assertion : H-S-H bond angle in H2S is c...

Assertion : H-S-H bond angle in `H_2S` is closer to `90^@` but: H-O-H bond angle in `H_2O` is `104.5^@`.
Reason : lp-lp repulsion is stronger in `H_2S` than in `H_2O`.

A

If both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion

B

If both Assertion and Reason are correct, but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion

C

If Assertion is correct , but Reason is incorrect

D

If both Assertion and Reason are incorrect

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Due to lower electronegativity of S as compared to O, the bond pairs of H-S bonds lie away from S in `H_2S` as compared to bond pairs of O-H bonds in `H_2O`.As a result, bp-bp repulsions in `H_2S` are weaker than in `H_2O` and hence H-S-H bond angle in `H_2S` is smaller `(90^@)` than H-O-H bond angle in `H_2O(104.5^@)`.
