Why do ionic solids conduct electricity ...

Why do ionic solids conduct electricity in aqueous solutions but not in the solid state ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ionic solids easily dissolve in polar solvents like water. In such a solution, ionic compounds exist as ions and the interionic distances are larger than in solid state. Due to lesser interionic attractions, ions can easily migrate toward oppositely charged electrodes. This results in electricity conductivity of solutions of ionic solids.
