Explain: [Ni (CN)4]^(2-) is diamagnetic ...

Explain: `[Ni (CN)_4]^(2-)` is diamagnetic while `[Ni(Cl)_4]^(2-)` is paramagnetic.

Text Solution

`[Ni(CO)_4` : Ni is in zero oxJdation state. Ni has outer `3d^8 4s^2` electronic configration.

The electrons of 4s-orbitals are forced into 3d - orbitals to pair up ·with the two unpaired d- electrons. Thus complex is diamagnetic. The complex has sp3 hybridisation. Therefore `[Ni(CO_4)]` has tetrahdral geometry.
`[PtCl_2(NH_3)_2]` : Platinum has outer electronic configuration `5d^9 6s^1. Pt^(2+)` ion has outter electronic configuration `5d^8`.

Therefore, complex is diamagnetic. The complex has square planar geometry due to `dsp^2` hybridisation.
