A substance has empirical formula CH(2)O...

A substance has empirical formula `CH_(2)O`. Its molecular mass is 180. What is its molecular formula?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We are given that
Empirical formula of a substance = `CH_(2)O`
Molecular mass of a substance = 180
We are to find out the molecular formula of the substance.
We know that `n= ("Molecular mass")/("Empirical formula mass") = (180)/(30)=6`
Empirical formula mass = atomic mass of `C+ 2 xx` atomic mass of H+ atomic mass of O
`=12 +2 xx 1 +16= 30`
`therfore` Moleculr formula `=n xx` Empirical formula `=6 xx (CH_(2)O)= C_(6)H_(12)O_(6)`
