What is meant by conjugate acid base pair ? Explain with the help of a chemical reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Conjugate acid base pairs are the substances, which can be formed from each other by the loss or gain of proton. For example, consider the following reaction :
`HCl (aq) + NH_(3)(aq) hArr NH_(4)^(+)(aq) + Cl^(-)(aq)`
Here, HCl donates `H^(+)` ion. Therefore, it behaves as an acid. `Cl^(-)` has tendency to accept `H^(+)` ion, therefore, it behaves as conjugate base of HCl and `NH_(4)^(+)` behaves as conjugate acid of `NH_(3)`.
