Why alcohols are weaker acids than water ?

Text Solution

Alcohols are weaker Acid than water.

Acidic character of alcohols is due to the polarity of `OH^(-)` bond. An electron releasing group, R in alcohol increases the electron density on oxygen tending to decrease in polarity of O - H bond. This decreases the acid strength. Further presence of electron releasing(-R) group in alkoxide ion destabilizes it, thus decreasing the acid strength of alcohols. Further, more than number of electron releasing groups (R) weaker acid is the alcohol. Thus acidic strength of `1^@, 2^@ and 3^@` alcohol decrease in the order :
`underset(1^@" alcohol "2^@"alcohol "3^@" alcohol")(R rarrCH_2OHgt R rarrunderset(H)underset(|)overset(R)overset(darr)C-OHgtRrarrunderset(R)underset(uarr)overset(R)overset(darr)C-OH)`
