Benzoic acid is less soluble due to less magnitude of hydrogen bonding. Less hydrogen bonding is due to reduced polarity and more hindrance provided by bulky groups. Acetic acid is more soluble due to the greater magnitude of hydrogen bonding. The solubility decreases as the number of carbon atoms increases. Higher carboxylic acids 7 practically insoluble in water due to increased hydrophobic interactions of the hydrocarbon part.
