Why methyl amine has lower boiling point...

Why methyl amine has lower boiling point than methanol.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to less electronegativity of N than O, the hydrogen bonding in alcohol is stronger than in amines. As such, boiling point of alcohols is more than amines of comparable molecular masses. For example
`underset("methylalcohol")overset(CH_3 - O - H) underset("methylamine")(CH_3 - oversetunderset(|)(H)(N) - H)`
Methylamine Methylamine has less boiling point than methanol.
