Why solubility of Haloalkanes in water is very low ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In water, the `H_2O` molecules are held together by strong H-bonds. Despite the slight polarity of alkyl halide, alkyl halide cannot from H-bonds with water molecules. As alkyl halides cannot form new bonds with water molecules, it cannot break the strong H-bonds present in between water molecule. Thus alkyl halides though slightly polar are not soluble in water.
