Hydrocarbon C5 H(10) does not react with...

Hydrocarbon `C_5 H_(10)` does not react with chlorine but gives a single monochloro compound, `C_5 H_9 Cl` in bright sunlight: Identify the hydrocarbon.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the molecular formula indicate, the hydrocarbon `C_5 H_(10)` is either, an alkene or a cycloalkane. It cannot be an alkene as it fails to react with chlorine in dark. As such it is a cycloalkane. As it gives only a single monochloro derivative, it is cyclopentane, in which all the ten hydrogen atoms are identical.
