Why are sleepers used below the rails?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sleepers are laid down under the rails of train to increase area of contact with surface of the earth. This results in less pressure on the surface of the earth so that the surface may no yield.

    B
If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
    C

State whether the statement given below is true or false, giving reason in brief: "Two identical trains are moving on rails along the equator on the earth in opposite directions with the same speed. They will exert the same pressure on the rails"

The radius of curvature of a railway line at a place when the train is moving with a speed of 36 kmh^(-1) is 1000 m, the distance between the two rails being 1.5 metre. Calculate the elevation of the outer rail above the inner rail so that there may be no side pressure on the rails.
