Why does Mn(II) shows maximum paramagnet...

Why does Mn(II) shows maximum paramagnetic
character among the divalent ions of first transition series ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The divalent metal ion with maximum number of unpaired electrons will have maximum Paramagnetic character. The divalent metal ion with maximum number of unpaired electrons is `Mn^(2+)` as explained below:
`Mn (Z=25): 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2 3d^5`
`Mn^(2+) : 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 3d^5`
Therefore `Mn^(2+)` has five unpaired electrons and has maximum Paramagnetic character.
