Oxidation : If a substance gains oxygen or loses hydrogen during a chemical reaction, it is said to be óxidised and such a reaction is known as oxidation reaction.
Examples:
(i) `4Na+O_2 rarr 2Na_2O`
In this reaction, sodium (Na) is oxidised to sodium oxide `(Na_2O)`.
(ii) `CuO + H_2 rarr Cu + H_2O`
In this reaction `H_2` is oxidised to `H_2O`.
