Define electron gain enthalpy or electron affinity. How does it vary along the period and down the group ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electron gain enthalpy or electron affinity is defined as the amount of energy change when an electron is added to a neutral isolated gaseous atom to form a negatively charged ion is called electron gain enthalpy. For example,
Atom `(g)+e^(-)to` Negative ion(g) + Electron gain enthalpy.
Generally, electron gain enthalpy increases along the period and decreases down the group.
