Halogens have maximum negative electron gain enthalpy in the respective periods of the periodic table. Why ?

Halogens are group 17 elements. Their general valence shell electronic configuartion is `ns^(2)np^(5)`. Halogens have tendency to take one eletron to acquire noble gas configuartion. They easily acquire one electron, because small amount of energy is released during this process.Therefore, halogens have high electron affinities.
