Explain the postulates of VSEPR theory.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Main postulates of VSEPR theory are as follows:
(i) the geometry of molecule depends upon the number of electron pairs around the central metal atom.
(ii) electron pairs tru to repel each other because they are negatively charged.
(iii) electron pairs try to occupy that positions in space which minimizes the repusion between them to attain stable geometry.
(iv) repulsive forces decrease sharply with bond angle.
