Although geometries of `NH_(3)` and `H_(2)O` molecules are distorted tetrahedral, bond angle in water is less than that of ammonia. Discuss.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Although geometries of `NH_(3)" and "H_(2)O` are distorted tetrahedral but the angle of `H_(2)O` is less than `NH_3` because in water there are two lone pairs. These deflect the shared pair of electrons towards each other to more extent resulting in small angle. in `NH_3` these is only one lone pair so deflection is less and hence bond angle is more.
