The main postulates of valence bond theory are as follows:
(i) A covalent bond is formed due to the overlapping of the outermost half filled orbitals of the combining atoms.
(ii) the two half filled orbitals involved in the covalent bond formation should contain electrons with opposite spins.
(iii) the completely filled orbitals remain undisturbed.
(iv) the valency of an element is equal to the number of half filled orbitals present in it.
(v) s-orbital does not show any directional characteristic whereas other are directional in nature.
