The ground state and excited state electronic configuration of phosphorus are represented as below:

Here five orbitals hybridise to form `sp^(3)d` hybridisation. These are directed towards the five corners of a trigonal bipyramidal.In this,three `P-Cl` bonds lie in one plane and make an angle of `120^(@)` with each other. The remaining two `P-Cl` bonds are lying at axial positions, making an angle of `90^@`. These are called axial bonds. The axial bonds are slightly longer than the equatorial bonds.
