Discuss the bonding in He2 molecule....

Discuss the bonding in `He_2` molecule.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The He molecule is formed by combination of two helium atoms. Its electronic configuration `sigma 1s^(2), sigma^(**)1s^(2)`. Its bond order is calculated as follows :
Bond order `=(1)/(2)(2-2)=0`.
In this, bond order is zero. Therefore, He molecule is unstable and does not exist.
