Why all bonds in PCl5 are not equal?...

Why all bonds in `PCl_5` are not equal?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to greater bond pair- bond pair repulsion two axial P-Cl bonds are Jess stable than three equatorial P-Cl bonds. So when `PCl_(5)` is heated less stable axial bonds are broken to forn `PCl_(3)` and `Cl_(2)` i.e.,
`PCl_(5) overset(Delta)rarr PCl_(3) + Cl_(2)`
