Why electron affinity of fluorine is less than that of chlorine ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electronic configuration of F and Cl is as follows:
F (Z = 9) = `1s^(2) 2s^(2) 2p^(5)`, Cl (Z = 17) = `1s^(2) 2s^(2) 2p^(6) 3s^(2) 3p^(5)`
The size of F is very small. Due to small· size electronic repulsions occur in F-atom. The incoming electron experiences less nuclear attraction. Cl has bigger size and it can accommodate the extra electron very easily. Thus, electron affinity of Cl is more thaff that of F.
