Asexual reproduction takes place by the production of zoospores (Ulothrix, Oedogonium).
(1) Aplanospore - Thin walled non motile spores. eg. Vaucheria.
(ii) Autospores - Spores which look similar to parent cell. eg. Chlorella
(iii) Hypnospore - Thick walled aplanospore. eg. Chlamydomonas nivalis.
(iv) Tetraspores - Diploid thallus of Polysiphonia produce haploid spores after meiosis).
Sexual reproduction in algae are of three type:
(1) Isogamy (Fusion of morphologically and Physiologically similar gametes eg. Ulothrix.
(ii) Anisogamy (Fusion of either morphologically or physiologically dissimilar gameteseg. Pandorina.
(iii) Oogamy (Fusion of both morphologically and physiologically dissimilar gametes.eg. Sargassum. The life cycle shows distinct alternation of generation
