Crossed Aldol Reaction and Condensations

Aldol condensation reaction takes place in aldehydes having alpha-hydrogen with a dilute base to yield β-hydroxy aldehydes known as aldols. This condensation reaction is most commonly referred to as aldol condensation. Now, if the condensation reaction exists between two different carbonyl compounds, then it is known as crossed aldol condensation.

What is the Aldol Condensation Reaction?

It can be defined as an organic reaction in which enolate ion (the anion formed when alpha hydrogen in the molecule of an aldehyde or a ketone is removed as a hydrogen ion) reacts with a carbonyl compound to form beta-hydroxy ketone or beta-hydroxy aldehyde, which afterwards undergoes dehydration to yield a conjugated enone.
