A block of wood floats in a bucket of water placed in a lift. Will the block sink more or less if the lift starts accelerating up?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Under normal conditions, fraction of volume immersed under floation condition is
`f_(1)=(rho_(s))/(rho_(l))` …(i)
If the lift starts accelerating up, then
upthurst-weight =ma
`:. V_(i)rho_(l)(g+a) -Vrho_(s)g=Vrho_(s)a`
Solving this equation, we get `V_(i)/(V)=f_(2)=(rho_(s))/(rho_(l))` ...(ii)
`f_(i)=f_(2)`
So, that the block neither sinks less nor more.
