Scandium forms no coloured ions, yet it is regarded as a transition elements. Explain why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Scandium in the ground state has one electron in the 3d-subshell. Hence, it is regarded as a transition elements. However, in its common oxidation state `+3` it has no electron in `3d` subshell `(3d^(0))` Hence, it does not form coloured red ions.
