Density of 3 molal NaOH solution is 1.11...

Density of 3 molal NaOH solution is 1.110 `g*mL^(-1)`. Calculate the molarity of the solution.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

3 molal NaOH solution means 3 moles of NaOH are dissolved in 1 kg solvent. So, the mass of solution
`=100g` solvent+120g NaOH=1120g
[`because` molar mass of NaOH=(23+16+1)=40]
Volume of solution`=("mass of solution")/("density of solution")(because d=(m)/(V))`
or, volume of solution`=(1120)/(1.110g*mL^(-1))=1009mL`
`therefore` Molarity`=("Mole of solute"xx1000)/("Vol. of solution (mL)")=(3xx1000)/(1009)=2.973 (M)`
