is it possible for atoms with even atomic number to contain unpaired electron?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atoms with even atomic number cann have unpaired electrons. This is in accordance with Hund's rule which states that the orbitals within the same subshell are at first filled up singly with electrons having parallel spin, before pairing takes place. For instance, in case of a carbon atom (atomic number 6 and electronic configuration: `1s^(2)2s^(2)2p_(x)^(1)2p_(y)^(1)2p_(z)^(0)`), there are two unpaired electrons.
