State the useful rule related to the solubility of a compound. Unlike ethane, ethanol dissolves in water. Explain and discus in terms of energy change.

Text Solution

The useful rule relevant to the solubility of a compound is "like dissolves like" which means a polar solute dissolves in polar solvent & a non-polar solute dissolves in non-polar solvent.
Ethanol molecules get involves n intermolecular H-bonding with water molecules. so ethanol redily dissolves in water. on the other hand, non-polar ethane `(CH_(3)CH_(3))` molecules are not capable of forming H-bonds with water molecules and so ethane does not dissolve in water.
