Inert gases do not generally participate in chemical reaction-explain with reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Because of very stable electronic configuration of the outermost shell, inet gases tend to exhibit least chemical reactivity. The two possible reasons that can explain the stable electronic configuration as well as poor reactivity of inert gases are as follows: (1) since there are no odd electrons in the valence shell of inert gases, they have the lest tendency to form a covalent bond by forming electron pair i.e., they produce no covalent compounds. (2) since the s-and p-orbitals of the valence shell are completely filled with electrons, the ionisation enthalpy of inert gases is very high white their electron gain enthalpy is negligibly small. hence, they exhibit least tendency to form ionic compounds.
