With the diagram explain dry cell (leclanche cell).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Dry cell is a primary battery.

Anode: Zinc container of the cell.
Cathode. Carbon rod surrounded by `MnO_(2)` powder.
The space between the anode is filled by paste of `NH_(4)Cl and ZnCl_(2)` mixture.
Reactions:
`{:(,"Anode",Zn(s) to Zn^(2+)+2e^(-)),(,"Cathode",MnO_(2)+NH_(4)^(+)+e^(-)to MnO(OH)+NH_(3)):}`
`"Overall reaction" (Zn(s)+2MnO_(2)+2NH_(4)^(+)to 2MnO(OH)+2NH_(3)+Zn^(2+)`
Cell potential -1.5V.
