From the following energy levels of hydrogen atom, the values of `E_(oo)` and `E_(3)` in J are, respectively
_______ `E_(oo)=` ........
_______ `E_(3)=` ........
_______ `E_(2)= -0.545xx10^(-18) J`
_______ `E_(1)=-2.18xx10^(-18) J`

A

`1, -0.242xx10^(-18)`

B

`oo, -0.726xx10^(-18)`

C

`0, -0.242xx10^(-18)`

D

`0, -0.321xx10^(-18)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

`E_(n)=-2.18xx10^(-18). Z^(2)/n^(2)`
where, `E_(n)=` energy of an electron in nth orbital .
Z = atomic number
n = number of orbital
For hydrogen, `Z=1`
Therefore,
`E_(3)=-2.18xx10^(-18) xx1/3^(2)`
`=-(2.18xx10^(-18))/9`
`=-0.242xx10^(-18)`
and `E_(oo)=-2.18xx10^(-18)xx1/oo`
`E_(oo)=0`
Hence, `E_(oo)=0` and `E_(3)=-0.242xx10^(-18) J`
and option (c) is the correct answer.
