A 3 mol sample of an ideal gas at STP expands in an isothermal reversible process to atttain a final volume of 100 L. calculate the work done by the gas.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The volume of 1 mol of an ideal gas at STP=22.4L
So, at STP the volume of 3 mol of an ideal gas `=3xx22.4=67.2L`
Now, work done by an ideal gas in isothermal reversible expaansion process, `w=-nRT"ln"(V_(2))/(V_(1))`
Given: `n=3,T=(273+0)=273K,V_(1)=67.2L,V_(2)=100L`
`therefore w=-3xx8.314xx273"ln"(100)/(67.2)=-2706.62J`
`therefore`Work done by the gas`=2706.62J`.
