Depict the bonding in the following compounds in terms of atomic orbitals involed and predict all the bond angles:
(1) `CD_(3)CH = CH_(2)`
(2) CH_(3)OCH_(3)`

Text Solution

The 3 carbon atoms are `sp^(3) , sp^(2) and sp^(2)` - hybridised respectively. Therefore the bond angles about these carbons are `109.5^(@) , 120^(@) and 120^(@)` respectively corres - ponding to tetrahedral and trigonal planar geom etrise.
(2) The carbon and oxyen atoms are all `sp^(3)` - hybridised. So, the bond angles are nearly `109.5^(@)` corresponding to tetrahedral geometry.
