Explain why the stability of `Cu^(+)` io in aqueous solution is lower `Cu^(2+)` ion .
`E_(Cu^(2+)|Cu)^(@)= +0.34 "V & "E_(Cu^(+)|Cu)^(@)= +0.52 V `

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since `E_(Cu^(+)|Cu)^(@)gtE_(Cu^(2+)|Cu')^(@)Cu^(+)` is a stronger oxidant than `Cu^(2+)` . Hence in aqueous solution , `Cu^(+)` has a greater tendency to get reduced to `Cu[2(Cu^(+)(aq)+2e to Cu(s)]` compared to `Cu^(2+)(aq)+2e to Cu(s)]` , thereby making `Cu^(+)` ion less stable
