What is the oxidation state of nitrogen...

What is the oxidation state of nitrogen in dinitrogen trioxide ? Explain why the tow N = O bonds present in it differ in length .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

First part : The oxidation state of N is dinitrogen trioxide `(N_(2)O_(3))` is + 3.
Second part : In `N_(2)O_(3)` there are two different types of N = O bond . One N = O bond participates in resonance with N - O , whereas, other N = O bond does not participate in resonance. Thus , there are two types of N = O bond with different bond lenghts .
