The melting and boiling points of Zn, Cd...

The melting and boiling points of Zn, Cd and Hg are low. How will you explain this ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `Zn(3d^(10)4s^(2)), Dc(4d^(10)5s^(2))` and `Hg(5d^(10)6s^(2))`, the d-subshells are completely filled and so they do not contain any unpaired electrons in their d-subshell. Hence the metallic bonds present in them are very weak. Consequently they have very low melting and boiling points.
