Why are the ionisation energies of 5d-metals greater than those of 3d-metals ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the 5d-series, after lanthanum `(._(57)La)`, there is unexpected in size due to lanthanoid contraction. As a result, the effective pull of nuclear charge on valence electrons is more in the case of 5d-metals than that in 3d-metals. So ionisation energies of 5d-metals are greater than those of 3d-metals.
