Why do the transition elements exhibit higher enthalpies of atomisation ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Enthalpy of atomisation is a measure of the amount of heat required to break the metal lattice to get free atoms. As most of the transition elements contain a large number of unpaired electrons, they are involved in stronger interatomic interactions leading to stronger metallic bonding between the atoms. So they have higher enthalpies of atomisation.
