Which of the 3d-series of the transition metals exhibits the largest number of oxidation states and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mn (Z = 25, outer electronic configuration : `3d^(5)4s^(2)`) exhibits the largest number of oxidation states. It has five unpaired electrons in the 3d - orbital. As 3d and 4s electrons have nearly the same energy, Mn can lose or share 3d or 4s electrons in maximum number. It shows all the oxidation states of Mn from + 2 to + 7.
