Scandium is considered to be a transition element though it does not form any coloured ion. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Scandium has partially filled d - orbitals in its penultimate shell `(Sc rarr [Ar]3d^(1)4s^(2))` and so it is considered to be a transition metal. Scandium exhibits only + 3 oxidation state where, there are no d - electrons and d - d transition is not possible. Therefore, scandium does not form coloured ions.
