Interpret non-linear shape of H(2)S and ...

Interpret non-linear shape of `H_(2)S` and non-planar shape of `PCl_(3)` on the basis of VSEPR theory.

Text Solution

Hybrdisation of S atom in `H_(2)S`
=1/2[6+2-zero + zero] =8/2 = 4 `(sp^(3))`
Hybridisation of P atom in `PCl_(3)=1//2[5+3zero + zero]=8//2=4(sp^(3))`
In`H_(2)S,` the sulphur atoms has two shared pairs and two lone pair. Therefore it is non-lonear (or bent ) in shape. On the other hand in `PCl_(3),` phosphors atom has three shared pairs and one lone pair. Therefore, the molecules is non-planar (or pyramidal ) in shape.
