H(2)O is a covalent molecule and the two...

`H_(2)O` is a covalent molecule and the two O-H bonds are of polar nature. The `H_(2)O` molecules are involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding both in water and ice which differ in their relative densities.
(i) What type of structure does ice possess ?
(ii) Out of ice and water, which is heavier ?
(iii) At what temperature, does water have maximum density ?
(iv) What is the value associated with this characteristic of water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Ice has a cage like structure which is created when `H_(2)O` molecules (terahedral in nature) are linked to one another by intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
(ii) Water is heavier than ice.
(iii) Water has maximum density at `4^(@)C.`
(iv) The characteristic of water is extremely beneficial to the aquatic animals or the animals which live in sea water. In severe winter, the surface of sea freezes at `0^(@)C.` But water being heavier, is present below the surface and the prevailing temperature is `4^(@)C.` The aquatic animals need out on the surface. They can comfortably live below the surface of sea.
