A student working in the laboratory kept and aqueous solution of ferrous suphate in a vessel made up of zinc.
After a few days, he found that the vessel had developed holes and cracks
(i) why did the vessel develop holes in it ?
(ii) What is the chemical reaction that takes place gt?
(iii) what is the value assouciateed with this?

(i) Zinc is placed above iron in the reactivity series. It has therefore. Reduced `Fe^(2+)` ions to Fe and it has been oxidised
(ii) `Zn(s)+Fe^(2+)(aq)rarrZn^(2+)(aq)+Fe(s)`
(iii)We should be very careful while selectingh container for stroing certain chemicals. Only those metals should be used for making the vessels or container s which are not involved in any type of chemical reactions.

Mohan was asked by his teacher to determine the boiling point of a liquid. He set up the appartus as shown in the figure. He rocorded the boiling point of the liquid as 140^(@)C and reported the reading to this teacher. The teacher asked him to repeat the experiment after dipping the bulb of the thermometer in the liquid and also placing the beaker on a tripod stand covered with a wire gauze. After reading this narration, answer the following question : (i) Was the reading taken by the student correct ? (ii) What was the necessity of wire gauze? (iii) How did teacher help the student? (iv) What is teh value based information associated with this?

Piyush is a student of class 10. His teacher was teaching the type of chemical reactions in the class. Piyush was aksed to carry out the reaction of electrolysis of water in the laboratory. Piyush set up the complete apparatus for the electrolysis of water. He took pure water (distilled water) to carry out this reaction. When Piyush passed electric current through this water for a considerable time even then no chemical reaction took place. Piyush told this problem to his classmate Arjun. Arjun thought over the problem and asked Piyush to add a little of a certain substance into pure water before passing electric current through it. When electric current was passed thorugh water after adding a little of this substance then a chemical reaction took place to form two gases X and Y . The volume of gas X collected over one of the electrodes was 8mL whreas the volume of gas Y collected over the other electrode was 16mL (a) Why no chemical reaction took place when electric current was passed thorugh pure water? (b) What substance was added in little quantity to pure water before passing electric current again? (c) How did the addition of little of this substance help in the electrolysis of water? (d) What is gas X ? Over which electrode is it collected? (e) What is gas Y ? Over which electrode is it collected? (f) What type of chemical reaction is demonstrated by this experiment ? Why? (g) What values are displayed by Arjun in this episode?

Apparatus: Copper wire, iron nail, beaker or big test tube, etc. Chemicals: Aqueous solutions of ferrous sulphate and copper sulphate. Procedure: i. Take a clean copper wire and a clean iron nail. ii. Dip the copper wire in ferrous sulphate solution and the iron nail in copper sulphate solution. iii . Keep on observing continually at a fixed interval of time. How did you recognize that a reaction has taken place?
