What would be the effect on the rms speed of gas molecules if the temperature of the gas is increased by a factor of 4?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know rms speed , `c=sqrt((3RT)/M) therefore c prop sqrt T`
Now, `c_1/c_2=sqrt(T_1/T_2)=sqrt(T_1/(4T_1))=1/2[si nce T_2=4T_1]`
or, `c_2=2c_1`
