Out of `sigma` and `pi-` bonds, which one is stronger and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`sigma` bond is stronger than a `pi` bond. This is because `sigma-` bond is formed by head on overlapping of orbitals and therefore, overlapping is large. On the other hand, `pi-` bond is formed by the sidewise overlapping, which is small.
