Which of the following ions show higher spin only magnetic moment values ?

A

`Ti^(3+)`

B

`Mn^(2+)`

C

`Fe^(2+)`

D

`Co^(2+)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Spin only magnetic moment is given by, `sqrt(n)(n+2)`B.M. where n is the number of unpaired electrons present in central metal ion.
Magnetic moments for all elements:
`Mn^(2+)=sqrt(5(5+2))=5.91B.M. `
`Fe^(2+)=sqrt(4(4+2))=4.89` B.M
`Ti^(3+)=sqrt(1(1+2))=1.73 B.M`
`CO^(3+)=sqrt(3(3+2))=3.87 B.M.`
Greater the value of n, greater the magnetic moment. So `Mn^(2+)` has the highest magnetic moment.
