A river 400 m wide is flowing at a rate of 2.0 m/s. A boat is sailing at a velocity of 10 m/s wilth respect to the water, in a direction perpendicular toteh river.a. Find the time taken by the boat to reach the opposite bank. b. How far from the point directly opposite to the starting point does tbhe boad reach the opposite bank?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) Time taken to cross the river
`t = (d)/(v_y) = (400 m)/(10 ms^-1) = 40 s`
(b) Drift `(x) = (v x) (t)`
=`(2 ms^-1)(40 s) = 80 m`
( c) Actual direction of boat,
`theta = tan^-1((10)/(2)) = tan^-1 s`,
(downstream) with the river flow.
