An electron and a proton moving with same speed enter the same magnetic field region at right angles to the direction of the field. For which of the two particles will the radius of the circular path be smaller?

Text Solution

When a charged particle enters in a magnetic field perpendicularly then it follows circular path and its radius is give as
`r = (mv)/(Bq) = (v)/(B(q//m))`
As v and B are same for both electron and proton.
So `r prop (1)/("q/m (specific charge ratio)")`
Charge on proton and electron is same but mass of proton is larger than mass of electron.
So (q/m) for proton is small than that of electron.
As a result, radius of circular path of electron will be smaller.
